(NEW YORK)–PEN America is concerned by a federal judge’s ruling that permits the White House to continue restricting the Associated Press from certain events, pending a hearing on March 20.

“This ruling, even if temporary, sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the fundamental principles of free speech,” said Tim Richardson, PEN America’s journalism and disinformation program director. “President Trump’s unconstitutional decision to limit AP access is designed to chill free speech, intimidate reporters, and make them think twice about what they write. Ultimately, the biggest loser in his decision is the American public, as the ability of journalists to directly hold our elected leaders to account will continue to be diminished. We remain hopeful that Judge McFadden will rule next month that a president cannot control how news is reported and will reinstate AP’s full access.”
