(NEW YORK)— PEN America issued the following comment about attacks on journalists covering the Jerusalem Day flag march in Israel:

“PEN America is deeply alarmed by the attacks on Palestinian and Israeli journalists covering the Jerusalem Day flag march. We call on Israeli authorities to hold those responsible for the violence to account and to safeguard journalists’ ability to freely do their work.”

During the march on Wednesday, according to Reuters, Israeli settlers and far right protesters reportedly assaulted Palestinian freelance journalist Saif Kwasmi, who contributes to local agency Al-Asiman News, and Israeli journalist Nir Hasson, a reporter for the Israeli daily Haaretz. Police arrested 18 people with some charges brought related to the assault on the journalists.
