(WASHINGTON) – PEN America expressed disappointment today over the Senate’s failure on Tuesday to pass the bipartisan Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act, known as the PRESS Act (S.2074).

This bipartisan legislation would provide a federal shield for journalists so they would not be compelled to reveal confidential sources. It is a vital element of press freedom in the United States and is supported by a broad group of journalists from news outlets across the political spectrum. While many states have such a shield law, a federal shield continues to remain elusive.

The PRESS Act passed the House of Representatives unanimously, with broad bipartisan support.

“The free press plays a vital role in American democracy.  There has never been a more important time to protect journalists doing their job. We continue to urge that this vital bill to protect journalists be included in any moving legislation before year’s end to ensure passage,” said Hadar Harris, managing director, PEN America, Washington.
