Ilham Tohti, Uyghur economist and writer, is the recipient of the 2014 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award, given each year to a currently imprisoned writer who has displayed courage in the face of threats to free expression. His daughter Jewher Ilham, a student at Indiana University, accepted the award on her father’s behalf at PEN’s 2014 Literary Gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on May 5.
