United Voices for Democracy: Student Protests and Free Speech in Florida

Join us for a roundtable discussion to discuss the Florida government’s response to student activism regarding the current student protest movement against the war in Gaza, and specifically First Amendment concerns with the state’s response.

This discussion will seek to build community connections through a shared understanding of the foundational First Amendment rights to assemble and protest, the historical precedent for student protest movements in the United States, and the ways that intergenerational trauma shapes our approaches to these topics. The conversation will be facilitated by a diverse group of youth leaders, constitutional experts, and experts in intergenerational trauma and conflict.

The goal is to provide participants with the tools necessary to identify anti-democratic trends in state responses to protest movements, and to have productive and factual conversations about these learnings within their communities. The roundtable discussion will not only provide invaluable insight from a diverse group of community leaders, but will encourage and facilitate participation, sharing, and healing for attendees.

The roundtable discussion will be followed by disinformation and digital safety trainings from PEN America. Participants will leave with a tool kit to have conversations about these topics with their own families, friends, and communities and to better identify and defend against misinformation and disinformation that propels anti-democratic policies.

Admission is free and lunch and snacks will be provided.
