The Picture Book Cut: Weavings for Intellectual Freedom

A colorful weaving made from strips of banned books, overlaid with a yellow BANNED BOOKS tape. Text reads: THE PICTURE BOOK CUT: WEAVINGS FOR INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM. Weavings by Ellis Angel. Pen America and library logos appear.

As a part of the Banned Book Weaving Series, the Westfield Memorial Library, Scotch Plains-based artist and activist Ellis Angel, and PEN America will present The Picture Book Cut: Weavings for Intellectual Freedom, an art installation of new paper weavings taken from PEN America’s list of most banned children’s books. Ellis created this weaving series in response to the concerning rise of organized censorship, orchestrated by a vocal minority, that has escalated dramatically since 2021. The exhibition at the library opens on October 6, 2025, and will remain on display until November 21, 2025.

Join us on November 20th at the Westfield Memorial Library to hear from artist Ellis Angel and Senior Program Manager of National Engagement at PEN America, Sabrina Adams.
