The Censor’s Cut: Weavings for Intellectual Freedom

Two woven artworks are wrapped with yellow tape reading BANNED BOOKS. A red banner at the top says BANNED BOOKS WEEK 2024. A box below states DONT CENSOR AMERICA, with the PEN America logo on the lower right.

In a unique collaboration, PEN America, Magic City Books, and New York City-based artist and activist Ellis Angel will present The Censor’s Cut: Weavings for Intellectual Freedom, an art installation of paper weavings created from 16 banned books. The exhibition at Magic City Books opens Sept. 22, the start of Banned Books Week, and will continue through Nov. 24.

Ellis Angel is an activist and artist specializing in political paper weavings. Angel’s work addresses issues of censorship and freedom of expression through innovative artistic techniques. https://www.ellisangel.com/
