Citizen Voices: Navigating Book Bans

Florida continues to lead the country in book bans with over 3000 unique titles currently banned in the state. Groups such as Moms for Liberty have had their voice dominate much of the discourse surrounding these book bans. However, on September 26 from 12:30 to 1:30, Pen America, in collaboration with Nova Southeastern University, invites Floridians to join us at the Alvin Sherman library for Citizen Voices: Navigating Book Bans.

This engaging workshop will delve into banned books, the legislation surrounding them, and the power of citizens to combat censorship. Attendees will hear from the legislative expert Katie Blankenship at PEN America as she contextualizes the bills that allow book bans to flourish in Florida and details how Floridians can make their voices heard for upcoming legislation. Katie will be joined by community activists from the Revolutionary Army who will recount their history of spreading awareness about book bans in their local community and impart on the audience tips and guidelines for mobilizing their own communities against book bans.

The Revolutionary Army is rooted in the principle of mutual aid, which emphasizes solidarity and support among people. By providing communities with essential resources, we aim to dismantle the barriers that prevent individuals from realizing their potential. Our mission is about building networks of support that strengthen entire communities.
