The results of the 2024 presidential election have sparked a wave of uncertainty across the literary community. Writers, journalists, educators, librarians, and artists—who are acutely impacted by free expression threats—ask, “What is now at stake?” At this year’s Annual General Meeting, we will gather virtually to envision the future of PEN America, reflecting on how we can navigate our current political climate and strengthen our mission to defend the liberties of writers amid the incoming administration.
Members of PEN America’s Board of Trustees Marie Arana, Tom Healy, Dinaw Mengestu, and Allison Markin Powell will be in conversation with Jonathan Friedman, PEN America’s Sy Syms Managing Director of U.S. Free Expression and Education Programs. Special remarks will be delivered by Jennifer Finney Boylan, President of the PEN America’s Board of Trustees, alongside Clarisse Rosaz Shariyf, Interim Co-CEO and Chief Program Officer for Literary Programming, and Summer Lopez, Interim Co-CEO and Chief Program Officer for Free Expression. An audience Q&A will follow the conversation.
The Annual General Meeting is a member-exclusive event. To register for this special event, visit the password-protected PEN America Member Benefits page.
