PEN America took action against multiple violations of free expression in 2025. This year, we exposed the unreasonable and inexplicable book removals in Monroe County, TN —removals that swept up reference books, history texts, and even Calvin and Hobbes. Our report on the administration’s first 100 days, “A Five Alarm Fire for Free Speech,” warned Americans that even in the earliest days of the new presidency, fundamental constitutional rights were already being undermined.
It didn’t take long for explicit examples to emerge: PEN America found more than 350+ words that were banned and scrubbed from federal websites, grants, and proposals; the President’s request—and Congress’ compliance—to claw back funding already earmarked for public radio and television broadcasting; and the disappearance of journalist Mario Guevara from the streets of Atlanta.
