Program Assistant, Freedom to Read

Yuliana Tamayo Latorre is the Program Assistant, Freedom to Read at PEN America. She supports efforts to track and respond to book bans and censorship across the country. Prior to joining PEN, she worked at the American Farm School in Thessaloniki, Greece, where she coordinated the college application process for Greek students applying to U.S. institutions and developed resources to streamline admissions and financial aid support.

She has a background in qualitative research and policy analysis, having co-authored a report on the impact of COVID-19 on undocumented immigrants in Pennsylvania and conducted original research on reproductive rights movements in the U.S. and Argentina. She has also worked on participatory democracy research focused on Latin America.

She is a former PPIA Fellow at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. Originally from Ecuador, she is a first-generation Latina immigrant and a passionate advocate for equity, education, and free expression.

Latorre holds a B.A. in Government and Sociology with a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Franklin & Marshall College, where she graduated magna cum laude and completed an honors thesis in political science.
