Journalist and Author Mike Hixenbaugh will join PEN America at the Austin Library Foundation on September 25th to discuss book bans and the movement to censor literature affecting public schools and libraries nationwide. Mike will be joined by educator and local advocate, Frank Strong, co-founder of the Texas Freedom to Read Project, and Texas librarian and co-founder of #Freadom Fighters, Becky Calzada. The panel will also include Matt Nosanchuk, the U.S. Department of Education’s deputy assistant secretary, who leads the Biden administration’s response to the unprecedented rise of school library and classroom content restrictions that can violate the civil rights of students.
The panel will be moderated by PEN America’s Director of the Freedom to Read Program, Kasey Meehan.
