NEW YORK—In addition to signing on to an amicus brief filed yesterday on behalf of the National Press Club, its Journalism Institute, and a dozen other journalism nonprofits including PEN America supporting Mexican journalist Emilio Gutiérrez-Soto and his son Oscar in the appeal of their asylum case, PEN America Director of Research and Policy Katy Glenn Bass issued the following statement:
“Mexico is one of the most deadly countries in the world for journalists. PEN America is proud to join an amicus brief in support of award-winning journalist Emilio Gutiérrez-Soto’s case for asylum in the U.S. Deporting him and his son to Mexico would be a near-certain death sentence because of his fearless reporting on corruption in the country. The U.S. should be a safe haven for journalists like him. We also call on ICE to release him and his son from detention immediately.”
