Best Debut Short Stories 2025: The PEN America Dau Prize

Best Debut Short Stories celebrates the most promising short story writers today. Selected by a panel of distinguished judges, these eight stories are the 2025 winners of the PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers, which recognizes outstanding debuts published in literary magazines.

Each story is accompanied by an introduction from the journal editor who first published it, providing insight about what’s exciting in fiction right now, and recognizing the vital work literary magazines do in nurturing new voices.

Thank the Bloom: 2023 Prison Writing Awards Anthology

Inspired by past lovers, current partnerships, old family dynamics, and steadfast friendships that both transcend prison walls and persevere within them, this anthology includes poetry, memoir, essay, fiction, and drama. And yet these themes defy genre, turning this anthology into something else entirely: a deeper exploration of self, of power, of institutionalized racism, of systemic isolation, and of the beauty that can be found in a garden bed.

Dreaming Out Loud: An Anthology of Migrant Writers

What do you miss the most about the community you left behind? What are your hopes and dreams for the future? How does your experience compare to your expectations? These are just a handful of the questions explored in DREAMing Out Loud: An Anthology of Migrant Writing. This anthology features original writing from DREAMing Out Loud, PEN America’s tuition-free writing workshop series for young undocumented and immigrant authors in New York City.

The Sentences That Create Us: Crafting a Writer’s Life in Prison

A road map for incarcerated people and their allies to have a thriving writing life behind bars—and shared beyond the walls—that draws on the unique insights of more than fifty contributors, most themselves justice-involved, to offer advice, inspiration and resources.
