Dennis Forrest

I have found that reading, writing, and writing about poetry can be a real joy at times, especially in a place where joy is so rare. My work has appeared in EDG2, Poesia, The Homeplanet News, Bayouphere, Marrow, and The Midnight Special, among others.

Dennis Forrest received the PEN Prison Writing 2006 Third Place Drama Award for In the Beginning and 2008 Honorable Mention for his essay “Prison and Poetry.”

I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind saying they enjoy being incarcerated. Prison, especially state prison, is a horrible place. It is not so much being told what, when, and how to live: the food is not that bad; you are provided with health care; you can avoid the violence most of the time;
