While imprisoned, Nga faced retaliation for appealing her conviction and endured physical assault from other prisoners. As part of an agreement to cut her nine-year sentence short, she went into exile in the United States in January 2020. She is also a co-founder of Vietnamese Women for Human Rights (VNWHR), an organization openly condemned by state media.
