On December 26, 2011, Chen was sentenced to 10 years in prison at a trial that lasted less than three hours for “inciting subversion of state power.” His conviction is based on quotations from over 30 of his articles published on overseas Chinese-language websites. On November 28, 2021, Xi was released after having served the full 10-year sentence.
