Greenwald was threatened via email and social media after the publication of an investigative series about corruption in Brazil's “Operation Car Wash.” Accused of hacking public officials’ phones, he was charged with cybercrimes in January 2020, which were soon dropped. He resigned from The Intercept in October 2020 after alleging censorship of an article about Hunter Biden, and since May 2023, he has hosted System Update, a political news show where he comments critically on U.S. and Brazilian politics.
