Kaya, who exposed the complicity of the Turkish intelligence service in the murder of journalist Hrant Dink, was detained in a sweep of journalists following the failed 2016 coup. His articles, books, and tweets were used to sentence him to 6 years and 3 months in prison on national security charges. He was released on parole in September 2020 after over four years in prison.
