Writer and leader of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party, Demirtaş has been jailed since 2016 despite his detention being ruled unconstitutional and the ECHR ordering his release. In March 2021, he was convicted for insulting President Erdoğan in remarks from 2015. In October 2022, he was sentenced to an additional two years and six months in prison for “targeting public officials.”
