Chan is a sociologist and leader of the pro-democracy movement Occupy Central. He was convicted on public nuisance charges and sentenced to 16 months in prison in April 2019. He was released early for “good behavior” in March 2020 and appealed his conviction; however, he withdrew the appeal in April 2021 and relocated to Taiwan in July 2021. In September 2021, he began teaching social movements and contemporary China at National Chengchi University in Taipei.
