Initially detained in 2017 for pro-Russian comments online and released after serving less than 2 years of his sentence, online commentator Taichibekov was rearrested in September 2020. He was found guilty of charges of “inciting ethnic discord” and sentenced to 7 years in prison in August 2021. Reports in 2023 claimed that he faces abusive conditions in prison, including solitary confinement.
