Secular writer Das was hacked to death by masked men with machetes in 2015. Seven years passed until any individuals were brought to justice. In March 2022, a Bangladesh court sentenced four people to death for the murder; only one person was in custody at the time. In July 2022, police officers in Kolkata arrested a second person named in the conviction. The remaining two perpetrators have yet to be arrested.
