Chaharmahalian is a literary activist, poet, and former board member of the Iranian Writers’ Association. She was arrested in October 2022 after receiving phone calls warning her not to participate in the ongoing protests. She was released in December 2022 on bail. She was ordered to serve her suspended sentence of 2 years and 8 months in November 2023, but her case was closed in February 2024.
