Kurmasheva, a Russian-American reporter with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, was briefly held at the airport in June 2023, and then charged with failing to register as a foreign agent and detained in October. In December, a criminal case was filed on charges of false information about the military, related to a book she had edited espousing anti-war views. In March 2024, her detention was extended to June.
