Zviad Ratiani is a renowned Georgian poet and translator. He has published five poetry collections and has won several literary prizes. His work is widely translated. In November 2024, he was brutally beaten by police in Tbilisi. He was sentenced to 8 days of administrative arrest in December. In June 2025, he was arrested for slapping a police officer after participating in anti-government protests for months. Footage of the incident showed that the slap was light and that the police officer involved sustained no injuries. In October 2025, Ratiani was sentenced to 2 years in prison for “violence or threat against a public official.”
