Zafer Arapkırlı is a veteran journalist. He is a columnist for BirGün newspaper. In November 2025, the first hearing in his trial for “insulting the president” was held. The charge stemmed from a 2024 tweet that said “You are a very bad screenwriter.” He was acquitted in March 2026. He was additionally tried for “incitement to hatred” and “misinformation” for other social media posts. In April, he was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison for the "misinformation" charges.
