Florencia Varela is PEN America’s Senior Manager of Institutional Advancement for Special Events. She oversees PEN America’s the organization’s fundraising and cultivation events, including the Authors’ Evenings Benefit series, featuring intimate dinners with renowned authors, and the annual Literary Gala.
Before joining PEN America, she was the Event and Partnerships Manager at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, where she produced private and partnership screening events including its annual signature outdoor screening events – Hawks’ Nite Out -, and its year-round Film Feast partnership screening series. While at Nitehawk, Florencia also spearheaded the corporate sponsorship efforts behind its tent-pole events, including its annual Shorts Festival, one of New York’s largest short film festivals.
Florencia’s background in fundraising and outreach is rooted in her in tenures at different arts organizations in New York City, including the New York Philharmonic, the Poetry Society of America, and the Rubin Museum of Art, where she managed the museum’s membership program.
Florencia holds a Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Columbia University, and her poetry has appeared in publications such as jubilat, Western Humanities Review, Gulf Coast, Phantom Limb, Adroit Journal, and Drunken Boat, among others.
