Deji Olukotun

Deji Olukotun is the Ford Foundation Freedom to Write Fellow at PEN American Center. Since joining in 2011, he founded PEN’s digital freedom program and expanded its advocacy before the United Nations. He also manages PEN’s center development work, amplifying the capacity of local PEN Centers in Myanmar, South Africa, Haiti, and Nigeria. He holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School, a BA from Yale University, and dual masters degrees in Creative Writing and Justice & Transformation from the University of Cape Town, where he was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. While working as a refugee attorney, he founded the SAFER project in South Africa to empower refugees from around the continent with legal skills. He has also worked as a corporate litigation attorney in intellectual property and he regularly provides the creative community in New York with legal advice. In November 2013, he was a juror at the
