Darrel Vandeveld

Darrel J. Vandeveld is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, and an assistant public defender in Erie County, Pennsylvania.  Lt. Col. Vandeveld served as a senior prosecutor at the US Military Commissions from May 2007 until December 2008, when he resigned to protest the lack of due process afforded the Guantanamo detainees, and the Commission’s inability “to deliver even a semblance of justice.”  Lt. Col. Vandeveld’s efforts ultimately led to the exoneration and repatriation of two detainees, Mohammed Jawad, and Haji Bismullah.  Lt. Col. Vandeveld is now at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, defending a US soldier accused of mass murder at a combat stress clinic in Iraq in 2009.
