Intern to assist in the Development Department at PEN America, a nonprofit working to advance literature and defend free expression around the world The Donor Relations, Events, and Fundraising Intern will learn about all aspects of fundraising for nonprofits, through grant writing, prospect research, database management, and special-events. The successful candidate will have an interest in human rights and literature, excellent research and writing skills, will be detail-oriented and organized, and able to work independently. Interns will gain an overview of the literary and publishing communities as well as valuable insight into nonprofit operations and institutional planning and growth.

Providing administrative support to PEN America’s Development team, responsibilities of this internship include:

  • Working with Development team to process reservations, gifts, and acknowledgment letters;

  • Creating eblasts, e-vites, and invitation graphics using Photoshop and Mailchimp;

  • Coordinating materials for guests at PEN America events;

  • Updating PEN America’s donor database with contact details, RSVP information, and payments from donors;

  • Drafting letters and email correspondence with PEN America’s donors and event participants;

  • Researching prospective donors, foundations, and event attendees; and,

  • Assisting in other development work as the need arises; Foundations, Year End Appeal, Major Gifts.

A minimum commitment of two days a week is preferred. This is an unpaid position, though a local travel stipend is available. PEN America internships are also eligible for college credit. Interns also have the opportunity to volunteer and attend PEN America literary events and intern luncheons with PEN America staff members – a series where staff discuss their roles and careers and do Q&As with the full intern team.
