The PEN American Center today announced nominees for the 2015 PEN Literary Awards. Among the 89 titles are Phil Klay’s “Redeployment,” a National Book Award winner, Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen: An American Lyric,” which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, and Cynthia Bond’s “Ruby,” the next Oprah book club pick.

The literary and human rights organization gives awards in nine areas: debut fiction, essays, science writing, nonfiction, literature by a writer of color, biography, sports writing, poetry in translation and prose in translation. There are also eight career achievement awards in theater, translation and other areas. Through its awards, grants and fellowships, PEN will give nearly $150,000 to writers and translators this year.

Other titles on today’s “longlists” include Leslie Jamison’s “The Empathy Exams,” nominated for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay; Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Sixth Extinction,” nominated for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award; Sheri Fink’s “Five Days at Memorial,” nominated for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction; and Marlon James’ “A Brief History of Seven Killings,” nominated for the PEN Open Book Award.

Today’s longlists will be whittled down to “shortlists” to be announced on April 15, and the winners will follow on May 13. The awards will be presented in a ceremony at The New School in New York on June 8.
