Fall 2017 Free Expression Programs Internship
PEN America is an organization of writers with a mission to both celebrate and defend freedom of expression. Comprised of more than 4,500 Members in the U.S. and working in cooperation with more than 20,000 writers worldwide, PEN America is the largest node in a global network of PEN Centers in over 100 countries.
The Free Expression Program is the advocacy arm of our organization, fighting for free expression in the U.S. and around the world. At PEN America, we are working to meet today’s challenges to free expression and press freedom: from online privacy in the face of digital surveillance, to book banning and other acts of censorship, to attacks on writers and journalists.
We seek an intern to assist this fall with our ongoing free expression work and campaigns. Interns can expect to conduct research on free expression issues in the United States and other focus countries; help draft advocacy materials including press releases, memos, and briefing papers; and prepare for major advocacy campaign and events.
We are looking for candidates with strong research and writing skills, an ability to attend to detail, and above all passion for PEN America’s mission. Language skills are a plus. Prospective interns are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with our work at www.pen.org
This internship is unpaid and eligible for college credit. A minimum commitment of 15-20 hours per week, for at least three months, is required. Interns committing to 15+ hours a week may apply for a local travel stipend.
