The Trick of Translation

“To translate is to walk down numerous scary corridors, to grope in the dark,” writes Jhumpa Lahiri in her introduction to her latest translation of Domenico Starnone, his layered and playfully inventive novel, Trick. Lahiri, one of America’s finest writers, exiled herself to the language of Italian and cut her translator’s teeth on Starnone’s linguistically and stylistically challenging novels. They discussed the work that has made him one of Italy’s finest writers and the rewards that come with literature’s journey to a new language. Moderated by Michael Reynolds.
