Storytime: Imagination in Action

Early Childhood, pre-k to 2nd/3rd graders

This fun drop-in storytime featured progressive read-aloud favorites. We told the history of a protest by the bestselling author of A is for Activist, explored figures who were Young, Gifted, and Black, and shared a layered Chinese fairytale retelling of the “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Children were encouraged to ask questions after each story, as they (and their parents!) learned how to raise their own voices. A guided dialogue between these popular authors followed the readings, encouraging audience participation, hosted by Paul Zelinsky, of PEN America’s Children’s and Young Adult Books Committee. With Innosanto Nagara, Jamia Wilson, and Ying Chang Compestine.
