[VIRTUAL] Realizing Abolition

Black-and-white photo of prison block; at the bottom: “Realizing Abolition” and logos of Scalawag and PEN America

In partnership with PEN America, Scalawag Magazine presents “Realizing Abolition” as part the magazine’s second Abolition Week, a time when Scalawag focuses exclusively on efforts to end mass incarceration and create a prison-free South. To that end, Members, readers, and skeptics are invited to join for this conversation and panel discussion.

Hear from Ayisha Horton and Sammie Werkheiser about the conditions women experience while incarcerated and the overlooked challenges facing them when they return. Learn more from innovative organizers from across the South who are creating new avenues of healing to replace structures of harm. From turning prisons into farms, to creating abolitionist toolkits, to expanding community care, this event will present the work of those changemakers who are not only making abolition possible, but making it present.

Attendees will have time in breakout rooms to meet with other abolitionists and folks on the journey to discuss how to begin realizing a home, a country, and a world without prisons.

Our sister organization PEN Belarus has spent years uplifting writers and supporting the freedom to write. Now, the government is trying to shut them down. Show your support and tell them they’re not alone.
