PEN America’s Free Expression Student Summit at Miami Dade College

PEN America and the Honors College at Miami Dade College (MDC) are teaming up to co-host the first-ever Student Summit on Free Expression in Miami this fall. Our day program schedule will include workshops led by student leaders on a variety of topics related to free expression including international human rights, book bans and educational gag orders, news media literacy and combating disinformation, and protest rights in the United States. Participants will then be invited to cap the day with a collaborative advocacy campaign activity working in groups to simulate advocacy responses to local issues through activism and the arts. During the lunch hour, students will also be invited to a special opportunity fair where they can learn about jobs, internships, fellowships, and other engagements to take part in free expression advocacy at Miami Dade College, with PEN America, and beyond. An informal student networking mixer will follow the Student Summit from 4:45 pm – 6:00 pm.
