PEN America Virtual Authors’ Evening with Zadie Smith

Date: Wednesday, August 5, 2020
Time: 1:00pm ET
Location: Zoom
Donation to Attend: $250 per ticket

Join us for a private event with celebrated author Zadie Smith, who will discuss her forthcoming book Intimations (Penguin Books, July 28, 2020). Smith is the author of the novels Grand Union, White Teeth, The Autograph Man, On Beauty, NW, and Swing Time, as well as two collections of essays, Changing My Mind and Feel Free.

Imitations, written during the early months of lockdown, explores ideas and questions prompted by an unprecedented situation. What does it mean to submit to a new reality–or to resist it? How do we compare relative sufferings? What is the relationship between time and work? In our isolation, what do other people mean to us? How do we think about them? What is the ratio of contempt to compassion in a crisis? When an unfamiliar world arrives, what does it reveal about the world that came before it?

A $250 donation is required to attend this very special evening. This donation is considered 100 percent tax-deductible and supports PEN America’s mission to defend writers and free expression at a time of unprecedented need. Please fill out the form below to make a contribution and reserve your ticket. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.

Space will be limited to 25 guests to facilitate audience participation and discussion. Following your RSVP, you will be sent the Zoom meeting invitation. This is a private video meeting, and only guests who are on the RSVP list will be permitted to join.

Please contact Hannah Waltz at [email protected] for any additional questions or concerns.
