PEN America Virtual Author’s Evening with Senator Tammy Duckworth

Tammy Duckworth headshot and "Every Day Is a Gift" book coverDate: Wednesday, June 16, 2021
Time: 7:00pm ET / 4:00pm PT
Location: Zoom
Donation to Attend: $125 per person

Join PEN America for an intimate evening with Senator Tammy Duckworth, a former U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who has served as the junior United States Senator for Illinois since 2017, for a discussion of her new memoir, Every Day is a Gift. This event is generously sponsored by Alan Jones and Craig Newmark.

In Every Day is a Gift, Duckworth recalls the journey she took from escaping hunger and homelessness as a teenager in Hawaii to becoming the first woman with a disability in the halls of Congress. In 2004, while serving in Iraq, Duckworth’s helicopter was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, and in the resulting explosion she lost her legs and badly mangled her right arm. Nearly 10 years later, after her recovery and two terms as a U.S. representative, she won election to the U.S. Senate. With a breezy candor that is, by turns, intimate and assertive, Duckworth offers an affecting account of a life of sacrifice, patriotism, valor, integrity, and grace. We are honored to be joined by Duckworth to discuss her memoir and her life of service, in and out of Congress.

A $125 donation is required to attend this very special evening. This donation is considered 100 percent tax-deductible and supports PEN America’s mission to defend writers and free expression at a time of unprecedented need. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
