Join us for a special conversation with author and Emmy Award-winning writer Suleika Jaouad on her debut memoir Between Two Kingdoms. The evening is generously sponsored by Diane Archer and Stephen Presser.

A few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, Jaouad was diagnosed with leukemia. But a year later, faced with a grim prognosis, she realized she didn’t want to wallow—she wanted to make something useful, even beautiful. It started with a daily journal and eventually became “Life, Interrupted,” the Emmy Award-winning New York Times column and video series she wrote from her hospital bed. Jaouad then embarked on a 100-day, 15,000-mile road trip across the country. She set out to meet some of the strangers who had written letters to her during her years in the hospital: a teenage girl in Florida also recovering from cancer, a teacher in California grieving the loss of her son, a death-row inmate in Texas who had spent years confined to a room. What she learned on this trip is that the divide between sick and well is porous, that the vast majority of us will travel back and forth between these realms throughout our lives. As a result, her memoir Between Two Kingdoms is a profound chronicle of survivorship and a fierce, tender, and inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again.

A $125 donation is required to attend this very special evening. This donation is considered 100 percent tax-deductible and supports PEN America’s mission to defend writers and free expression at a time of unprecedented need. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
