In 1935 Sinclair Lewis predicted the rise of an American populist and fascist state in his dystopian satire, It Can’t Happen Here. Is Lewis’s novel coming true, or will democracy prevail? Authors Masha Gessen, Nancy MacLean, Max Boot, and New York Review of Books editor Ian Buruma considered this question and how we can further strengthen democratic institutions.
