There are no perfect crystal balls in the literary world, but the Granta list has become nearly infallible… Here, according to Granta’s judges, is the future of the American novel. —The Los Angeles Times

A decade ago Granta devoted an issue to new fiction by the twenty writers it judged to be the “Best of Young American Novelists.” The list, which included Sherman Alexie, Edwidge Danticat, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jonathan Franzen and Lorrie Moore, was a revealing snapshot of a generation of writers about to come into their own. This year, judges A.M. Homes, Edmund White, Meghan O’Rourke, Paul Yamazaki of City Lights, and Granta’s publisher Sigrid Rausing and editor Ian Jack have chosen 21 writers to represent the best new American writing in the 21st century. Join many of them for an evening of readings and discussion about America’s place in the world as seen through its writers, with a signing and reception afterward.
