[VIRTUAL] Empowering Communities On and Offline: How Organizers Can Stem the Spread of Misinfo

Join us for an interactive and practical digital literacy training designed to equip activists, organizers, and organizational leaders with tools and resources to protect their communities from the harmful and proliferating effects of misinformation. Structured as an informative workshop and a group discussion, we will explore strategies that grasstops leaders can use to equip their communities with the skills necessary to source accurate information and spot misleading content online, as well as tactics to help with disseminating those skills.

Organizers and advocates play a crucial role in keeping communities informed, connected, and safe, and as such are uniquely positioned to embed healthy digital behavior into the way friends, families, and neighbors engage with news and share information. During this workshop, we will start with the basics: media literacy terminology and definitions, the real-life threats of mis/disinformation, and fact-checking tools. We will then look a little more deeply into how media literacy can be a powerful organizing tool and an empowering skill for healthy communities, and review our Disinfo Defense Toolkit for Organizers & Advocates. We’ll brainstorm effective messaging and content for different audiences so that participants can leave with templates and resources to bring back to their communities.
