[VIRTUAL] Dare to Speak: Suzanne Nossel in Conversation with Dr. John Schumann

Magic City Books and PEN America Tulsa are excited to welcome Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America, for a virtual event to discuss her new book. Dare to Speak: Defending Free Speech for All is a playbook for navigating and defending free speech today, for paving a pathway that promotes free expression while also cultivating a more inclusive public culture. Nossel will be in conversation with Dr. John Schumann, president of OU-Tulsa and a Tulsa Literary Coalition board member.

John H. Schumann, MD became president of OU-Tulsa in 2015. Schumann previously served as associate professor, residency program director, and vice-chair of education for the Department of Internal Medicine. He is also the developer, coproducer, and host of the StudioTulsa program “Medical Mondays” on Tulsa’s local NPR station, KWGS 89.5-FM. His weekly show explores healthcare and the human condition. He has also contributed to the national NPR radio programs “Marketplace” and “All Things Considered.” Schumann serves on the board of directors for a variety of community organizations, including Tulsa Regional Chamber, Tulsa Area United Way, Oklahoma Policy Institute, OCCJ, Sustainable Tulsa, Congregation B’nai Emunah, 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission, Tulsa Literacy Coalition, Tulsa CARES, and Impact Tulsa.

Suzanne Nossel is the CEO of PEN America, the foremost organization working to protect and advance human rights, free expression, and literature. As CEO, Nossel has led campaigns for free expression in Hong Kong and China, Myanmar, Russia, Eurasia, and the United States. Her career has spanned government service and leadership roles in the corporate and nonprofit sectors. Nossel has also served as the chief operating officer of Human Rights Watch and as executive director of Amnesty International USA. She also held senior State Department positions in the Clinton and Obama administrations. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Nossel frequently writes op-eds for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other publications, as well as a regular column for Foreign Policy.
