Break Out: Celebrating the 2022 PEN America Prison Writing Award Winners

Join PEN America, in partnership with the Brooklyn Public Library, for Break Out 2022 to celebrate the launch of the 2022 PEN America Prison Writing Awards anthology, Variations on an Undisclosed Location

This community-centered staging of compelling cross-genre contemporary literature by currently incarcerated writers will be performed by a dynamic cadre of authors, actors, and activists including Asia Kate Dillon, Kara Young, Linda La, José Olivarez, Jermaine Archer, Dario Pena and Tyrone Taylor.

For over 30 years, thousands of imprisoned writers from around the country submit poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and dramatic works to the yearly PEN Prison Writing Contest, one of the longest-running outlets of free expression for the country’s incarcerated population. Our celebration stands in memorial of Bell Gale Chevigny, celebrating her critical role as a pivotal member and leader of the PEN America Prison Writing Committee for several decades.

Break Out 2022 is free and open to the public. ASL interpretation will be provided.
