Mexican journalist and Penguin sued in bid to ban sale of bombshell book
Prominent Mexican journalist Carmen Aristegui and her publisher are being sued in an attempt to force them to remove their book, La casa blanca de Peña Nieto, from stores. The book is based on an exposé that revealed that the country’s first lady had purchased a $7m mansion from a contractor with close links to her husband, President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Pentagon revises law of war manual after criticism of press treatment
The Pentagon on Friday updated its law of war manual after a previous version came under fire for appearing to allow commanders to treat journalists as belligerents or spies. The revised manual provides greater detail on the legitimate purposes that journalists serve and makes clear that journalists have all the rights of civilians. HUFFINGTON POST

Chinese authorities issue arrest notice for founder of protest-tracking blog
Chinese authorities have issued a formal arrest notice for citizen journalist Lu Yuyu after detaining him for five weeks. Lu is founder of the blog “Not News,” which keeps track of and reports on mass demonstrations in China. Lu and his girlfriend, Li Tingyu, have been reporting and distributing news of mass demonstrations in China since 2012.

Department of Homeland Security detains journalist returning from Beirut
The Department of Homeland Security has come under scrutiny over its policy of detaining journalists, after Maria Abi-Habib, a Middle East correspondent for Wall Street Journal, said she was detained and asked to hand over her cellphones at Los Angeles international airport last week. THE GUARDIAN

Wife of British author, critic of Thai monarchy, taken into custody
Noppawan “Ploy” Bunluesilp, the wife of British author Andrew MacGregor Marshall, was taken into custody on Friday after police raided her parents’ home in Bangkok. Marshall’s book, A Kingdom in Crisis: Thailand’s Struggle for Democracy in the Twenty-First Century, cast a critical eye on the Thai royal family and politics in the country and is banned in Thailand.

China to shut churches in G20 host city on safety grounds
Chinese authorities have reportedly ordered the closure of churches in the eastern city hosting the G20 summit to “create a safe environment.” Since late 2013 the coastal province has been the setting for a controversial Communist party cross removal campaign. Demolition teams have removed crosses from more than 1,200 places of worship, activists say. THE GUARDIAN
