PEN American Center & FSG Books Present: Aleksandar Hemon & Colum McCann in Conversation

“When Hemon’s work is funny, it can make you laugh in spite of everything, and when it is sad, it’s hard to stand up afterward.” —John Jeremiah Sullivan

Aleksandar Hemon will discuss his new memoir, The Book of My Lives, a book of essays which record his various “lives.” In his first nonfiction work, Hemon tries to restore the memories of his youth and follow the threads that link his Bosnian past with his American present. Raw, questioning, and alive with compassion, The Book of My Lives is a portrait of a world lost to one of history’s darkest conflicts and that rarest of things: a necessary book by one of our most important writers. Hemon will discuss his work with fellow writer Colum McCann, author of the acclaimed novel Let the Great World Spin and the forthcoming Transatlantic.
