The Internet was once lauded as a game-changing medium for ensuring that free expression would not be subject to censorship. However, governments around the world have sought to clamp down on digital freedoms and the ability to express oneself online without fear of repercussions. Online privacy and the right to be free from online harassment are becoming increasing issues of concern for writers and artists: today, nearly 50 percent of the imprisoned writers on the PEN Case List are persecuted for their work online. PEN America recognizes the importance of digital media for free expression and works to support such expression around the globe by fighting mass surveillance, championing net neutrality, and defending individuals targeted for online expression.
