Dr. Abdujalil al-Singace requires urgent specialist medical treatment for ongoing health problems, some of which result from torture and ill-treatment in prison. Dr. Al-Singace is serving a life sentence for his peaceful opposition activities. PEN is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace and all others arbitrarily detained in Bahrain in violation of Articles 9 and 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Bahrain is a state party. It also demands that Dr. Al-Singace receives full access to medical attention as a matter of urgency, and that his reports of ill-treatment in Jaw prison are fully investigated.

Background Information

Blogger and human rights activist Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace was sentenced by a special security court in June 2011 to life imprisonment for his peaceful activities in support of greater human rights in Bahrain; the verdict was confirmed by the appeal’s court on 4 September 2012. He was sentenced together with another 12 activists, including human rights defender and blogger Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja.

According to PEN’s information, Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace was taken to hospital in mid-September 2014 for investigation into ongoing problems resulting from a seriously damaged ear-drum. The problem is believed to have been caused by torture and ill-treatment in Jaw prison in 2012. Dr. Al-Singace is disabled, and relies on a wheel-chair for his mobility. In October 2013, his family and lawyer reported that he had not received any medical attention since March 2013, and that his health was seriously deteriorating. There is a record of 14 different appointments being repeatedly cancelled, rescheduled, and canceled again. These appointments have been with the skin disease clinic, the heart disease clinic, and the optician’s clinic at the Bahrain Defense Force Hospital, as well as the Prison clinic. In addition to the medical care required to treat his damaged ear drum, Dr. Al Singace also requires an operation to treat a nasal sinus inflammation, as confirmed by an ENT Consultant at Salmanyia Hospital in the presence of the prison doctor. Abduljalil Al-Singace also suffers from an enlarged prostrate and a shoulder injury. Furthermore, he requires a new examination for medical glasses as his vision has also deteriorated. Although he has reportedly received some limited medical care in early 2014, his health condition is still giving serious cause for concern.
