Berta Cáceres’s name was on Honduran military hit list, says former soldier
Berta Cáceres, the murdered environmental campaigner, appeared on a hit list distributed to U.S.-trained special forces units of the Honduran military months before her death, a former soldier has claimed. Lists featuring the names and photographs of dozens of social and environmental activists were given to two elite units, with orders to eliminate each target.

Protestors fight Cleveland’s plan to restrict free speech during GOP convention
U.S. District Judge James Gwin said Thursday that Cleveland’s proposed restrictions on protesters during the Republican National Convention put too much of a squeeze on free speech. Gwin issued a preliminary injunction that rejects the city’s plan to establish a roughly 3.3-square-mile “event zone” encompassing most of downtown Cleveland.

Man who depicted Erdoğan as Gollum given suspended sentence
Rifat Çetin, who depicted Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as the Lord of the Rings character Gollum, has been convicted of insulting the Turkish president. According to Turkish media reports, a court in the south-west province of Antalya on Thursday sentenced Çetin to a year in prison, suspended for five years, and stripped him of his parental custody rights. The Sudanese security service has released six detained students of the University of Khartoum. Their families plan to file a petition against the university’s dismissal from their studies.
